Tracing through mixers and exchanges
When money goes into a privacy pool or an exchange, the trail seems to stop. Tracing finds where it most likely came out.
The idea
A mixer or an exchange pools everyone's money, so the chain doesn't say which withdrawal pays out which deposit. But people usually take out what they put in, soon after. Tracing looks at the other side of the pool for transfers of the same amount, close in time, and ranks the wallets behind them.
A deposit is traced forward, to the withdrawals after it. A withdrawal is traced back, to the deposits before it.
How to trace
- 1
Put both sides on the board
The wallet, and the mixer pool or exchange wallet it sent to or received from. Showing the wallet's connections usually brings it. - 2
Open the arrow between them
Click its amount. The Flow panel lists the transfers. - 3
Click Trace on a transfer
The search panel opens with the matching transfers on the other side, best first. - 4
Add the match to the board
+ Board puts the wallet on the board, linked as likely the same owner. Through a mixer, the link is drawn wallet → pool → matched wallet, with the match score on it.
Trace is offered on transfers to or from a mixer or exchange Iris knows, of SOL or stablecoins, worth at least 0.01 SOL or $1.
The time window
Choose how far to search: 1 h, 6 h, 24 h or 7 d. It starts at 24 hours for a mixer, where people wait to blend in, and 1 hour for an exchange, where they usually don't. If nothing matches, try a longer one. Each search counts as one trace.
Reading the results
Each candidate shows:
- A match score, from the gap in time and how close the amount is.
- The amount, how long after (or before) it moved, and its tier.
- Same wallet when the money came back to the traced wallet itself.
- via deposit when it went through an exchange deposit address.
| Tier | Gap between the two transfers |
|---|---|
| Trivial | Within 5 minutes |
| Strong | Within 30 minutes |
| Likely | Within an hour |
| Weak | Within 6 hours |
| Loose | Within 24 hours |
| Distant | More than a day apart |
The summary line says how many transfers of the same amount were found. 1 means only one fits: a strong lead. Many means the amount is common, and timing has to decide.
The “Same owner?” link
Click a trace link to see the evidence side by side: the deposit, the gap, the withdrawal, and what the pool kept as its fee (“0.8951 SOL less came out: the fee”).
What a trace is, and isn't
A lead, not a proof
Amount and timing alone link the two wallets. A high score on a unique amount is a strong lead; confirm it with what else you know (shared funders, the same counterparties, the same habits) before you act on it.
